The Community Garden was established in 2009 to accommodate a Local Training Initiative Horticulture Course. As the students produced excess produce, it was decided to sell this to the public. So, Kilmeedy Homegrown was born and established as a micro business.

Given the popularity of the produce on sale, the students and course co-ordinators felt it would be more cost and time effective to set up a vegetable box scheme subscribed to by customers for a specified number of weeks each season.

When the Local Training Initiative finished in November 2018, volunteers along with the local Community Employment Scheme (Glenquin Connello) continued to supply customers and further develop the garden. The Vegetable Box Scheme is a thriving micro-enterprise, with a long subscriber waiting list of potential customers in the West Limerick Area.

Kilmeedy Homegrown currently has four growers and a number of volunteers working the ¾ acre site in Kilmeedy. We have two large growing ploytunnels and a smaller propagation tunnel where up to 30 different varieties of fruit and vegetables are produced and are available when in season.

Currently the Vegetable Box Scheme runs for six week blocks at €70 payable at the beginning of the six weeks. Purchases can also be made direct from the garden through our Facebook page Kilmeedy Homegrown or by contacting Tina 087 9758873.
