Welcome to Roots Community Shop & Café
Kilmeedy Community Development Group CLG welcomes you to Roots Community Shop and Café website. Our premises can be found in the heart of Kilmeedy village in West Limerick, at the site of the old Geary’s/Ahern’s shop. Newly renovated, with the help of LEADER and Department of Rural Affairs funding, Roots opened its doors on December 14th 2020. With the determination and innovation of our committee, staff and volunteers, along with the support of our community, Roots has become a vibrant social and economic hub of Kilmeedy village.

Who We Are
Roots is owned and operated by Kilmeedy Community Development Group CLG, a charity established by a group of Kilmeedy volunteers in the 1990s, to foster and preserve the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of our small West Limerick village in the heartlands of the Golden Vale.
Kilmeedy Development has a strong track record in operating successful social enterprises and recreational spaces for the benefit of our community (a pre-school and after school club; Aras Ide Resource Centre; Healthcare LTI; Glenquin Connello CE Scheme; Kilmeedy Homegrown Community Garden).

Who We Are
The roots of Roots Café run quite deep! Believe it or not our Community Café and Shop has been home to a shop serving the people of Kilmeedy and beyond for well over a hundred years. We are not sure about the date the shop opened but we figure it was sometime around 1880 when it was owned by James and Ellen Gayer. Records show they were running the shop as a haberdashery, drapery and grocery store.
